Spectacular patterns in flame lit up the night sky over Tian’anmen Square at the heart of Beijing as fireworks heralded the evening’s grand gala to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. After a rousing parade in the morning, 60,000 people are taking part in the event that started at 8:00 p.m.
