Review Committee for Major Translation Projects Inaugurated in Beijing
China’s Review Committee for Major Translation Projects, launched by China International Publishing Group (CIPG) and the Translators Association of China (TAC),was established on Monday in Beijing. Aimed at improving China’s capacity for engaging in international communication so as to tell China’s stories well, presenting a true, multi-dimensional, and panoramic view of China, and enhancing the country’s cultural soft power, the committee will gather first-class translation experts and resources at home and abroad, provide a quality guarantee mechanism for major translation projects, and guide translation projects in the service of the cause of external communication.
GaoAnming, deputy head and editor-in-chief of CIPG, said the committee is expected to undertake and advance animportant translation program, build an external communication system with Chinese characteristics and improvethe skills of high-end translation professionals.
Zhou Mingwei, head of the TAC, said that China’s international communication has undergone profound changes and thus the media and translation community engaged in outbound communication is faced with great challenges. He added that the committee should carry on the hardworking and dedicated spirit of old-generation translators and lead the translation community to scale new heights.
More than 50 translation experts proficient in 24 foreign languages were appointed as members of the committee at the inauguration ceremony. Their responsibilities include: finalizing and evaluating major translation projects; discussing, determining and regularly updating the translations for Chinese key terms and expressions; setting standards for major translation projects and assessing how well the standards are working; examining translation procedures; and providing advice on translation projects.
The translation and publication portal for Chinese key terms and expressions (http://tppckte.org.cn/)wasreleased following the inauguration ceremony of the committee. Jointly launchedby CIPG, the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies, and the China Academy of Translation (CAT), the portal is designed to updatemultilingual translations for Chinese key terms, expressions and documents and to introduce the latest Chinese policies and ideas to the international community.
The portal is comprised of four sub-portals: multilingual translations of key concepts, definitions and expressions; key words to understand China; database for multilingual translations of typical Chinese terms and expressions; and multilingual database of essentials and expert commentaries on CPC and government documents.
